Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics

The Masters Programme is designed to provide young, promising graduates of physics or related fields (mainly from developing countries) with postgraduate theoretical and clinical training so that candidates may be recognised as clinical medical physicists in their home countries.

The Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics (MMP) is a two-year advanced training programme run jointly by the ICTP and the University of Trieste.

The programme is designed to provide young, promising graduates of physics or related fields (mainly from developing countries) with postgraduate theoretical and clinical training so that they may be recognised as clinical medical physicists in their home countries.

The programme comprises a year of basic and advanced courses (taught in English) prepared with the assistance of experts from the ICTP, the University of Trieste, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and appointed external advisors. This is followed by a year of professional clinical training in a medical physics department of an Italian hospital in the programme's training network.

The MMP is co-sponsored by the IAEA, and is supported by the International Organisation for Medical Physics (IOMP), the European Federation of Organizations in Medical Physics (EFOMP), the Italian Association of Medical Physics (AIFM), in collaboration with Trieste university hospital. The Master’s Programme is accredited by the International Organisation for Medical Physics (IOMP).

Fields of research

Medical physics

First year programme: Anatomy and Physiology as applied to Medical Physics Radiobiology Radiation Physics Radiation Dosimetry Physics of Nuclear Medicine Medical Physics Imaging fundamentals Physics of diagnostic and Interventional Radiology (X rays, US, MRI, Hybrid systems) Physics of Radiation Oncology Radiation Protection Information Technology in Medical Physics (330 hours of lessons and 230 hours of guided exercises) Second year programme: Clinical training in radiotherapy, diagnostic and interventional radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation protection (1200 hours) Thesis work (125 hours)

Who can apply

The minimum qualification for applicants is a degree equivalent to an MSc in physics or related fields. The selection of candidates will be based on their university performance, research activity and professional experience in the field. Adequate proficiency in the English language is required. The Programme is open to young (generally below 30 years of age) qualified graduates from countries that are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA.

Study Requirements

In addition to course examinations and clinical training evaluation, the Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics requires participants to work on a dissertation to be submitted and defended during the last month of the programme. The master's degree is awarded by the University of Trieste only to those candidates who successfully complete all examinations, clinical training, project defence and other requirements as may be decided by the Master's Committee. Participants will also be required to take part in ongoing activities of ICTP in their related fields.

Entitlements

Qualified candidates may attend the course at their own cost.

A limited number of full or partial scholarships will be awarded to successful candidates from developing countries, thanks to the support of the IAEA and ICTP. Full support includes travel, university fees and a monthly stipend of 900 euro in the first year and 1000 euro in the second (or a reduced amount if accommodation is provided).

Partial support can be in the form of:

  • half support: travel, university fees and a monthly stipend of 450 euro in the first and 500 in the second year
  • or, only travel and registration fees.
How to apply

Individuals wishing to apply for the Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics must complete the online application form.

The applicant has to submit a CV, a transcription of the university degree and can also submit a letter of recommendation from senior scientists familiar with the applicant. Scientists making recommendations should indicate if they have any contacts at the ICTP. Candidates should have English proficiency since all lectures and activities are held in English.

Selection process

The selection committee is made up of Members of the Master’s Committee. Each application received is carefully considered on an individual basis and the selection is based on: age, academic title, research activity and professional experience in the field and on the letter/s of recommendation. Other factors, such as nationality and gender are also taken into consideration.

The pre-selected applicants will be asked to submit to the ICTP the "Dichiarazione di Valore" from the Italian Embassy in their country, testifying that their curriculum studiorum is equivalent to the Italian "Laurea specialistica". The Master’s Committee may ask pre-selected candidates to join a virtual interview.

IAEA is supporting a limited number of qualified through a Interregional Technical Cooperation Project. The pre-selected applicants from countries having an active TC project will be requested to submit the nomination to IAEA through the established official channels using the IAEA nomination form.

From the pre-selected list of applicants that have provided valid “Dichiarazione di Valore” and from the IAEA evaluation on the submitted nominations, up to 30 students will be finally selected.

The selected students will be contacted with the result of their application immediately after the selection has been made. No responses will be provided to any enquiry prior to the finalization of the selection.
