ICTP Postdoc Opportunities

ICTP announces two new, exciting postdoctoral positions open to candidates of any nationality.

One position, which would start immediately, is for a scientific computing expert with strong experience in lecturing as well as in supporting activities in the context of international educational programmes for higher education. The position is available in the Information and Communication Technology Department (ICTS), coordinating ICTP's role in the Master in High Performance Computing programme, which is run jointly with the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA).

Candidates should have a PhD in computer science, applied math, computational physics or related areas, qualifications as a scientific software developer with high-level skills in problem solving, and experience as a lecturer on advanced courses in scientific computing. The selected candidate is expected to support the ICTP in coordinating the MHPC programme, with the following responsibilities:

• liaise with SISSA administration to guarantee the essential link between the two involved institutions throughout the academic year, from the initial students’ selection to the final graduation ceremony;
• coordinate the MHPC calendar and the participation of international lecturers, under the supervision of the MHPC scientific council; 
• deliver advanced courses on scientific software development;
• collaborate on the enhancement of the MHPC programme and other related courses;
• supervise the final thesis projects of several students.

The candidate contributes to the key ICTP activities on HPC and scientific software development such as the school of parallel programming for HPC, the summer school in research data science and the advanced workshop on collaborative development. Main contribution to those activities is expected on the definition of the agenda as well as on lecturing advanced courses and supervising computer laboratories.

ICTP offers internationally competitive remuneration and a number of benefits. The appointment will be made for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal. Postdoctoral Position in Seismology

A postdoctoral position is also available, starting immediately, in the Solid-Earth Geophysics Research Group of the ICTP Earth System Physics section. The research group uses seismology, space geodesy, tectonics and numerical experiments to understand the following topics: mechanics of earthquakes and faulting, structure and rheology of the lithosphere in active earthquake and volcanic regions, physics of transient deformation, and active tectonics and earthquake hazard.

The postdoctoral position is in seismology and specifically on the evaluation of probabilistic fault displacement hazard assessment in inhomogeneous medium using physics-based modelling.

Fellows must have completed a PhD in seismology or related disciplines with extensive knowledge and skills relevant to the research opportunity.
