ICTP Colloquium

Prof. Nicola Spaldin to speak
ICTP Colloquium

ICTP is hosting Prof. Nicola Spaldin for a colloquium on how to use laboratory materials to study the behavior of the early universe just after the Big Bang: "From materials to cosmology: studying the early universe under the microscope". Nicola Spaldin is professor of materials theory at ETH Zurich.

She developed a new class of materials known as multiferroics, which combine simultaneous ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, for which she received the 2017 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science award, among many other honors. She is a passionate science educator, director of her department’s study program, and holder of the ETH Golden Owl Award for excellence in teaching.

In her talk, she will present some of her most recent data. She will shed light on the amazing properties of a popular multiferroic material, with its coexisting magnetic, ferroelectric and structural phase transitions, which is able to generate the crystallographic equivalent of cosmic strings.

The talk is taking place at 15:30 in the Budinich Lecture Hall.

You can follow the livestream of the event via ICTP’s facebook page or at ictp.it/livestream.

Light refreshments will be served after the lecture.
