Mathematical physicist Sir Michael Berry will be the featured speaker of ICTP's 2017 Salam Distinguished Lecture Series , which will take place in ICTP's Budinich Lecture Hall from 25 to 27 January 2017, starting at 16:30 each day. Sir Michael will speak about "Superoscillations: unexpected fine detail and extreme values in mathematics and quantum and wave physics". His talks will be on topics that have strong implications for optics, quantum physics and signal processing, such as shifted Fourier transforms and optical singularities.
A self-described “dreamer and scribbler, of mathematics, mostly”, Sir Michael is a long-time friend of ICTP. He received the Centre's most prestigious prize, the Dirac Medal, in 1995. A particle physics phenomenon known as the Berry phase is named after him; the phase plays a significant role in many areas of microscopic physics ranging from chemistry and molecular physics to optics, nuclear and solid state physics and relativistic quantum field theory.
Sir Michael is a professor in the H.H. Wills Physics Laboratory at the University of Bristol, UK. He was elected to the Royal Society of London in 1982, and has won numerous prizes and awards, including the Wolf Prize for Physics.
