ICTP and Generali, one of the world's largest insurance companies, recently teamed up to produce an educational event for Trieste schoolchildren on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the earthquake which struck the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region of northeast Italy.
The goal of the event, titled "Tremble Without Fear", was to teach today's children, who have not personally experienced an earthquake, what earthquakes are, how to recognize them and what to do to prevent and reduce the risks associated with this phenomenon. Nearly 300 children from elementary schools in the province of Trieste accompanied by their grandparents and their teachers attended the event, which was held at ICTP.
A video summary of the event is here.
Presenters at the event included ICTP Director Fernando Quevedo, Luisa Coloni of Generali, regional councilor to local autonomies and to the Civil Protection of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia Paolo Panontin, ICTP earthquake expert Karim Aoudia, and Aldo Bernardo, director of the Museum of Venzone Tiere Motus.
The meeting is part of a three-year partnership agreement between Generali Group and ICTP to support the analysis that ICTP scientists will perform on a system of faults in the area in order to develop a seismological model for mitigating the consequences of earthquakes.
