Guido Altarelli, a giant of High Energy Physics
In Memoriam

Guido Altarelli, one of the leading particle physics phenomenologists of the past decades, suddenly passed away on 30 September 2015. This is a great loss for the entire high energy community. Guido was one of the most influential figures in the field of high energy physics and in particular one of the main theoretical physicists who was in continuous communication with the large experimental community.

His many contributions to the field cover many subjects, from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), Electroweak Observables,  Collider and Flavor Physics, the Higgs particle, Neutrino physics, Supersymmetry and other aspects of physics beyond the Standard Model.

His renown 1977 article  "Asymptotic Freedom in Parton Language", written in collaboration with Giorgio Parisi that describes the evolution equation in QCD, has been textbook material and recently awarded (earned?) them the 2015 European Physics Society High Energy Physics Prize (together with Bjorken, Dorkshitzer and Lipatov). He had also received other awards, including the prestigious Sakurai Prize in 2012.

Besides these highlights, the impact that Guido has had on the community is hard to overestimate. He was the reference point in any discussion about interpretation of experimental data. The respect and admiration he had from the community was enormous.

Guido graduated from the University of Rome, La Sapienza under Raoul Gatto and was later a professor there and at the Rome Tre University. He was a senior member of the CERN Theory Group from 1987 until his retirement in 2006. He was the leader of the  CERN Theory Division for several years and a member of several experimental collaborations.

Guido was a very good friend of ICTP where he visited and lectured in many occasions. He will be greatly missed.
