ICTP has been named the recipient of the 2014 Premio Barcola, a
prestigious local prize given to people or institutes that have
enhanced the image of Trieste and Italy throughout the world. The
centre's director, Fernando Quevedo, will accept the award on
behalf of ICTP in a ceremony to be held Saturday 17 May in
Trieste.
The prize comes as ICTP gears up for its 50th anniversary
celebrations in October. Over the years, the centre has attracted
more than 130,000 visiting scientists from 188 countries to its
headquarters in Trieste, including 102 Nobel laureates.
Past winners of the Premio Barcola reflect the wide range of
fields represented by the prize, from Italian astrophysicist
Margherita Hack to volunteers of the Fondazione Luchetta Ota
d'Angelo Hrovatin, an organization that helps child war
victims.
