Towards Gender Equality in Physics

Physics World, the magazine published by Institute of Physics, recently interviewed Shobhana Narasimhan, condensed matter theorist at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India, and a regular ICTP visitor. The interview highlighted the challenges women physicists face in a male-dominated physics scene in India and around the world.

Since her time at Harvard University, from where she obtained her PhD, Narasimhan has been actively involved in building support for women in science. At Harvard, she began a group called Women in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

From 16 September to 19 September 2013, Narasimhan will be organising a Career Development Workshop for Women in Physics at ICTP. Narasimhan says that the workshop "is designed to help women from all over the developing world to gain confidence and build up support networks." Erika Coppola, researcher at ICTP's Earth System Physics group, will be the local organiser.
