Prestigious Award for Former ICTP Postdoctoral Fellow

The 2013 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB) in physics was awarded to high energy physicist and former ICTP postdoctoral fellow Amol Dighe. The award is given annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India, for notable and outstanding research in biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, mathematics, medicine and physics.  It is one of the most coveted awards in multidisciplinary science in India.

Dighe is a professor of physics in the department of theoretical physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, India. His recent research has focused on neutrinos, their nature and the role they play in astrophysics and cosmology.

Dighe was at ICTP from 1998 to 1999 for his postdoctoral stint and he worked with ICTP's principal research scientist Alexei Smirnov. Together they have published several important papers on neutrinos, including "The physics of relic neutrinos" and "Identifying the neutrino mass spectrum from a supernova neutrino burst".
